Burnout
Starting with the styrofoam wig head on the far left of the piece, I cast a series of plastic shells using gradually less material. The resulting forms appeared almost identical on the outside, even preserving the texture of the styrofoam original. But what interested me the most was the intricate web of cured plastic on the inside of the shell, only visible when looking up through the open neck. By arranging the heads from most to least material and mounting lightbulbs inside the shells, this piece highlights a less apparent beauty in the casting process. To fully display the progression, I designed and built a sawhorse that would allow me to easily mount the light fixtures and bring the piece to viewing height.
